Started by mas · 10 months ago

At our meeting this weekend one of the things we looked at was our working practices as an organisation - including how we’re structured and how our members (including young people) can participate in our ‘governance’.

  • Our Youth Director Programme is an exciting project which we are currently developing. This programme will centre on youth participation in decision-making. The programme aims to overcome barriers to participation and aims to help young people across the Borough develop their skills and provide opportunities to have their voices heard more clearly.

Through the Resident Participation Unit, we aim to engage young people through educating them around housing and the structures and processes we aim to adopt, such as the Housing Board of Directors, service panels etc. The programme will aim to include activities centred on networking with peers, working with voluntary agencies and other partners whom work within the community. These activities aim to develop an information structure and also create links with our staff. We hope a create a clear understanding and an awareness of our core responsibilities that is hoped will be embraced by young people to enable opportunities for their views to be fed into our organisational structures.

The Young Director Programme - Aims

We aim to find at least 4 young people from each of the 3 high schools.
We aim to develop a Youth Forum to provide a voice for the young people.
We aim to build on the Youth Forum and link it to the Housing Board of Directors to allow young people to influence services.
We aim to offer free training and development.

Yes I like this last model ... I like it a lot!
  • Good luck with that Mikey - sounds exciting.

We were chatting about this model recently and saying one of the benefits of it is that it takes off some of the pressure to 'have to have' young people on 'the committee' - it allows people that are not on 'the committee' to still have a valued role. We thought this was important because one of the things we've learned is that not all young people want to be on 'the committee' - but just because they don't doesn't mean they don't want to be involved, so this model works well in that it allows people to select different methods of involvement but still to be equally valued (providing they contribute).

Of course this needs balancing with some consideration to whether some young people really don't want to be on committee's or whether they need support to do so (ie. they're not confident/skilled enough yet but with support would do so). So the balance is allowing many options but also encouraging progress along pathways (ie. representation/more responsible roles & so on).
